General Program Information

Since our company's inception, Shift Insurance has aimed to change the way you think about insurance and now we aim to change the way you think about learning. Pursuing post-secondary education can provide us with important experiences that extend our knowledge and contribute to personal growth. However, there are also life experiences that occur outside the classroom that can offer bits of wisdom in our lives. Consider driving, for instance. The majority of the country’s population spends a good chunk of time behind the wheel and/or as passengers on a regular basis but how often do any of us seize the opportunity to reflect on these experiences?

Take a moment to think about your most memorable experiences—both good and bad—as a driver and/or a passenger. Whether or not you noticed it at the time, they probably helped you learn something about yourself, others, or life in general. Share your experiences with us and take advantage of our new scholarship opportunity! Shift Insurance is offering The Drive to Learn scholarship award to college students across the United States to honor the learning done in and outside of classroom walls. If you are currently a full-time student at a four-year university, graduate program, community college, or trade school, Shift Insurance wants to hear from you. Simply tell us about an important learning experience you had while on the road —either as a driver or a passenger—and you could receive $1000!

Eligibility Requirements
  1. Read the Terms and Conditions - Our full Terms and Conditions section must be read and agreed to in order to qualify for  the program.

  2. Full time student - Applicants must be enrolled full time at a four-year university, graduate program, community college, or trade school (at least 12 undergraduate units or 6-9 graduate units) located in the continental United States.

  3. Citizenship - U.S citizens and non-U.S. citizens are eligible to apply

  4. Response to Prompt - In 750-1000 words, prepare a written response that addresses ONE of the following prompts:

    1. Some of the best life-lessons are the ones we learn from our mistakes. Share a lesson you learned when facing the consequences of bad decision-making as a driver or a passenger. Describe the situation and explain how it led to a valuable learning experience.

    2. Learning how to drive is a different experience for everyone because some may find it easy to accomplish while others struggle with the challenge. Describe your experience. What did it take for you to become a confident driver? What valuable lesson(s) did you learn--about yourself, others, or life in general--during or after the process?

    3. You may have noticed that people tend to change over time. For example, you're probably not the same person you were as a freshman in high school. Think about the driver you were when you first obtained your driver's license. Maybe you were a young and reckless driver or perhaps a timid and careful driver. Now think about the driver you are today. Describe how you have changed as a driver. Does this transformation reflect changes in other aspects of your life (i.e. driving more carefully after a near-death experience, driving aggressively after losing your job, etc.)? If so, explain. Would you consider this transformation to your benefit or do you see it as a potential problem? Why?

    4. Although the vast majority of the country's population drives on a regular basis, there are still many people who do not. Are you one of them? What's keeping you from getting behind the wheel? Maybe the city you live in is not commuter-friendly, maybe you cannot afford to buy a car, or perhaps you simply choose not to drive. Describe your situation. Is this an obstacle for you? Why or why not? How has not driving influenced you and your life?

  5. Application Submission - Visit our scholarship application page and follow the directions for completing your submission. Applications must be received no later than 11:59pm PST on July 01, 2016.

    Guidelines for Written Response
    • Written responses must be the applicant's original work. School rules apply here: Plagiarism in any form will disqualify you from this and all future Shift Insurance scholarship opportunities.
    • Responses must be written in English and submitted along with the application by 11:59pm PST on July 01, 2016. It is highly recommended that you first type your response in a word processing program and then copy/paste the final draft onto the appropriate text box in the application form. This helps prevent losing work in the event of internet problems or other technical difficulties.
    • Select ONE prompt to respond to and address ALL of its components in your written response. You are expected to answer all questions posed within that prompt.
    • Don't worry about how big or small your life-lessons may seem. If it mattered enough to provide you with a valuable learning experience that you typically wouldn’t receive inside a classroom, we want to hear about it. Trying to impress us or writing about what you think we want to read will take more time than is necessary. Be genuine and demonstrate how your driving experience has helped you learn more about yourself, others, or life in general.
    • Don't treat this like another English paper. Be bold and let your personality stand out. While the use of proper grammar, spelling, and punctuation is required, you are NOT expected to produce the typical five-paragraph essay (introduction, body, conclusion), although you may do so if you wish.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION - Eligibility for the Car Insurance Scholarship Program is contingent upon the terms listed above and under our program's Terms and Conditions. Applicants need not meet a G.P.A requirement but must be enrolled full time at the time of application submission and at the time of award announcement. The selected applicant is urged to use the scholarship funds toward academic needs, including tuition, on-campus boarding, books, and other fees, for the remaining 2015-2016 school year. The funds will be delivered in a one-time disbursement through the applicant's educational institution. Only one scholarship will be awarded per academic year. The selected applicant will be exempt from re-applying to future Car Insurance Scholarship opportunities.

No applications will be accepted after 11:59pm PST on July 1st, 2016. The selected applicant will be announced through the Shift Insurance website solely by name and educational institution. All other applicant information will never be sold, distributed, or used for marketing purposes. View our privacy policy. Applicant information will, however, be released to the applicant's educational institution for identification purposes. The funds will be sent to the applicant's educational institution within 10 business days of the award announcement. Fund disbursement to the student is then the responsibility of the educational institution. Scholarship eligibility and guidelines may be subject to change.
