21st Century: The Basics
In 1958 21st Century Insurance was started by Louis W. Foster.
Initially, the company was founded under the name 20th Century Insurance, and begane as an inter-insurance exchange, which allows subscribers to exchange their insurance policies though an attorney. AAA and Farmer’s Insurance Group also fall under this category.
In 2009, 21st Century Insurance was bought out by Farmers Insurance, and is still owned by the company today.
The company began as primarily an auto insurance company, and is still best known for its discount auto insurance policy options, although, as of August 2016, 21st is only servicing new automobile policies in the state of California.
Once 21st Century was acquired, customers were able to purchase products such as home and life insurance through 21st Century’s parent company, Farmers Insurance Group.
21st Century: Strengths and Weaknesses
Compared to big name insurers like Allstate and State Farm, which have over 80 years under their belts, 21st Century is a young company, although this shouldn’t deter you from considering it as an option.
|One-stop shopping for a variety of insurance products.||Not known for competitive pricing.|
|Personal service from local agents.||Average customer satisfaction for auto insurance claims.|
|Auto quoting tool shows rates from major competitors.||Does not offer its own homeowners or renters insurance.|
|Allstate’s Rewards program offers merchandise, gift cards and more for good drivers.||Customer service does not stand out.|
21st Century is a great company if you’re looking for:
- Incredibly competitive auto insurance rates
- Free roadside assistance for every cover vehicle insured
- User-friendly and convenient online tools to help consumers manage their accounts
- An A.M. Best rating of A
- Standard and Poor’s rating of A+
- Few than the median customer complaints for its size
The company really shines in its auto insurance offerings; most customers report that they switch to the insurance provider based on the company’s low rates. 21st Century’s rates are so competitive, in fact, that customers report saving an average of over $300 annually.
All transaction or inquiries through 21st Century are handled either conducted over the phone or online, which could be a pro or con, depending on what you’re looking for in an insurance company.
There are a few other caveats to electing 21st Century as your insurer. For example:
- The company focuses on auto insurance only, and all other products are purchased through third parties
- While 21st Century offers discounts, they vary by state and are not generally available in the state of Hawaii
- 21st Century Insurance claims are serviced through Farmers Insurance Group
- Consumer survey results for 21st Century reveal low marks
Discounts and Deals
21st Century insurance itself is a discount provider, which means that you can reasonably expect all of the company’s prices to be extremely competitive.
21st Century is a direct competitor to companies like Geico and Progressive, and offers standard auto coverage, which includes collision, comprehensive, medical payments, personal injury protection and liability coverage.
For those who are demonstrated safe drivers, who own homes, have more than one vehicle on their policy or can provide proof of being a good student, 21st Century offers several discounts.
|Discount Description||Discount Amount|
|Group Program Credit||9% - 14%|
|Mature Driver Course||2%|
You may also qualify for a discount if:
- Your car uses alternative fuel
- Your car has anti-theft, airbags and automatic seat belts installed
- You drive a new car
- You have completed a defensive driving course
As a policyholder, you can also choose to add uninsured or underinsured motorists to your policy, which will pay for injuries when the at-fault party cannot cover the medical costs or has no insurance. You may also be able to purchase gap insurance. Both of these options come at an additional cost.
Homeowners can earn a discount of up to 10% on coverage for combining their home and auto policies. Like most discounts through 21st, these are only available in select states.
21st Century Complaint Information
Customer complaints provide an interesting basis for comparison in many of the reviews in our series, and 21st Century is no exception.
According to Consumer Affairs, the company’s reviews are mixed, with some reviews lauding the company for excellent customer service, timely claims processing and helpful agents. The other side of these reviews complain of slow claims processing, poor claim resolution and changes in their accounts.
to be without Merit.
On the company’s website, the 5,000-plus reviews result in an average of 4.3 out of 5 stars, which is a fairly decent rating, despite the negative comments.
In a 2015 insurance shopping study, J.D. Powers ranked 21st Century near the bottom of a list of national providers; however, the company ranked better in J.D. Powers automobile claims satisfaction study.
In spite of the mixed reviews, consumers all report the same thing: the company’s competitive ratings drew customers in and are the reason that many decide to stick with 21st Century.
