Infinity: Company History
Infinity Insurance began in Birmingham, Alabama in 1955, and since grown to provide car insurance to drivers with less-than-stellar driving histories in 43 states (although Infinity now only serves new policies in Arizona, Texas, California and Florida).
In 1991, the Pennsylvania Company, a sister company to American Premier Underwriters, bought the group.
Four years later, American premier Underwriters, Inc. merged with the American Financial Corporation to form the American Financial Group (also known as AFG). This merger played an important role in the growth of Infinity in 2002, when AFG company transferred all of its common stock to the Infinity Property & Casualty Corporation.
The company is known for its top-performing brand Infinity Insurance, which provides car insurance through over 12,500 independent agents.
Infinity currently clocks in as the third largest provider of “nonstandard” car insurance through independent agents. In addition to this, the company ranks among the Top 50 Property and Casualty Insurance companies, alongside big names like Geico, Allstate and Progressive.
In addition to offering auto insurance, Infinity offers insurance for all-terrain vehicles, boats, classic cars, RVs and motorcycles, as well as:
- Renters insurance
- Commercial liability coverage
- Commercial auto coverage
- Homeowners insurance
- Life insurance
- Health insurance
Infinity: Pros and Cons
If you’ve followed this series of reviews so far, you probably already know that I always advocate for my clients working with an independent agent. I stress this for several reasons, namely: you’ll almost always be able to find a better policy by shopping around and comparing options. An agent knows the ins and outs of the industry and will work for you, helping you compare the companies and policies that will suit you.
To put it simply: an independent agent provides a personal touch. This is one of the pros of going with Infinity Insurance. The company’s vast network of local agents provides a personal touch to the process of purchasing car insurance.
|High Financial Strength Ratings||Limited Discount Offerings|
|Great Pricing for “High Risk” Drivers||Below Average Claims Satisfaction|
|Competitive Pricing for Foreign Licensed Drivers||Not Ideal for Insurance High Value Vehicles|
This personal touch is particularly helpful, as the company’s website tends to be bare-bones; customers can manage their accounts, but there are little details available about coverage options and discounts.
Let’s take a look at some of the other ways Infinity shines:
- An A.M. Best Rating of A
- Insurance options for motorists with checkered driving histories
- A DriverClub program, which offers roadside assistance to members 24 hours. The best part? The DriverClub membership is free! Users simply pay for the services on an as-needed basis.
- Infinity provides SR-22 insurance forms for their clients, proving that they have sufficient coverage
While auto insurance is Infinity’s specialty, the company tends to skew higher than the median amount of consumer complaints for a company of its size. The complaints of policyholders vary, but frequently cite delays in claim payments, dissatisfaction with claim settlements and dissatisfaction with claim denials.
Additionally, if you are looking for the convenience of purchasing all of your insurance policies through one carrier, Infinity may not be the best company, as life insurance and homeowner’s policies are issued by non-affiliated companies.
Discounts and Deals
When it comes to auto insurance for drivers who are considered high-risk, there are surprisingly few carriers who are willing to take on the risk and, typically, those that do charge a hefty premium for policyholders.
Infinity is different because, not only does Infinity offer coverage options for these drivers, the company also has numerous discounts!
|Discount Description||Discount Amount|
|Good Student||0% - 10%|
|Mature Driver Course||5%|
|Multi–Car||14% - 28%|
|Passive Restraint||1% - 8%|
These might vary from state-to-state, but here are some examples:
- If you pay your policy in full, you could earn a 15% discount
- If you are a driver with a clean record – i.e., no accidents – you could be eligible to earn a 25% discount
- By simply switching your auto coverage to Infinity, you can earn a 15% discount
- Policyholders who insure more than one vehicle with Infinity can earn a 38% discount
- Policyholders may also be able to save money by switching to automatic electronic payments
For information on possible discounts for homeowner’s insurance or life insurance, Infinity’s website offers very little information, so I recommend speaking to an agent.
Infinity Complaint Information
According to the National Association of Insurance Commissioners, Infinity has a higher-than-median number of consumer complaints compared to other companies of its size.
The industry median of consumer complaints is 1, and Infinity comes in at 4.18 for car insurance, the majority of which have to do with how the company handles the settling and paying of claims.
to be without Merit.
According to J.D. Power’s consumer satisfaction study, Infinity also ranks below average based on its pricing, claims processing, options and billing and customer service interactions.
Additionally, the Better Business Bureau graded Infinity a C-, based on the filing of over 300 complaints filed against the agency over a three-year time span. While three of these complaints remain unaddressed, Infinity has an overall good standing with the BBB.
It’s important to note that not all reviews for this company are negative; a recent Verizon study found that customers rated Infinity as one of the friendliest and easiest car insurance companies to contact via phone, and many customers are pleased with the company’s flexible 24/7 call center.

The important thing to keep in mind when shopping for insurance is that consumer complaints, while helpful tools, should not be the sole reason you choose a company. Instead, I encourage my clients to look at reviews as one small piece of a larger picture.
Infinity offers personalized options for high risk drivers, and the company could be a good fit for you; however, you should always consider the following when shopping for any type of insurance coverage:
- Do the policy options offered by the company suit my coverage needs?
- Does this coverage suit my budget?
- Were all of my questions answered thoroughly?
- What are my alternative options?
Above all, you should consider your comfort. Finding insurance can be an incredibly taxing process, so you should work with an agent or company that makes you feel at ease.
